International Workshop on IMPACT project Charleroi, Belgium

Increasing Migration and Climate Change Public Awareness through Collaboration and Teaching (IMPACT) project organized its International Workshop from 2-5 February 2026, in Charleroi, Belgium. The event was held by College Saint Michel Collège Saint-Michel and about 25 participants from five (5) consortium member organizations of the IMPACT project from Belgium, Ethiopia, Italy, Greece and Spain attended the event.   HESPI, as a member of the consortium, was represented by Mr. Daniel Fantaye, HESPI’s Programs Director.

The workshop was designed to enhance the skills of the educational community (teachers, youth workers, and social workers) in raising awareness and addressing the nexus between climate change and migration. The aim was to promote the exchange of best practices and innovative strategies to build awareness of how climate change acts as a driver of migration, with special emphasis on the educational context and emerging challenges related to climate and social justice.

On day one, the IMPACT project coordinators introduced the project and the international workshop essence and agenda. Moreover, Daniel from HESPI presented on Climate Change and Migration from the perspective of the Horn of Africa.  This was followed by practicing on the various activities included in the Toolkit in two-groups. These activities included Climate Change Role Play simulation, Migration Journey Mapping, Game-based learning: climate domino effect and Debates on whether European Countries accept more climate migrants.

On the second day, the workshop addressed Activities Data Detectives: analyzing climate and migration data, Photo Voice (visual storytelling). This was followed by summary and evaluation of the workshop.  Finally, the consortium member representatives discussed communications and next steps of the IMPACT project.

On the third day, the participants visited immigrants support center in Charleroi, Belgium called Fedasil Centre. This was followed by a visit to European Parliament and the European Union in Brussels.
